Reef Boats

These cruises spend the whole day onboard the boat, except when snorkelling, diving, or having a Glass Bottom Boat ride that is. They're perfect if you plan on doing lots of snorkelling. They're not so good for non or poor swimmers. You will snorkel directly from the boat and generally not be able to touch the bottom. A crew member will be stationed to watch all snorkellers in the water.

Islands

Island Cruises from Cairns are great for families or mixed groups. To snorkel you enter the water directly from the beach - this is perfect for poor swimmers or young kids. Green Island and Fitzroy Island have resorts on them so offer a bit more for the non swimmer. The Franklands, Low Isles, Michelmas and Upolo Cays are natural islands, and while very beautiful are totally undeveloped.

Pontoons

Pontoons are permanently moored at the very edge of the Great Barrier Reef. Think of them as an artificial island. They offer a stable roomy platform for the days activities. They are great for families, people worried about seasickness or mixed need groups. While the snorkelling does take place in deep water most pontoons have floats strategically placed as rest stops for snorkellers. A stagff member is also on permanent watch duty.
