The Amazing Thunderbolt Reef Rafting Experience.....
The Thunderbolt!!After an extremely friendly & efficient check-in at a Reef Fleet Terminal we boarded the Fitzroy Flyer on our 2 day 1 night Fitzroy Experience.   Peter could not make the trip so a friend joined me for the week-end.   Arriving approximately 40 minutes later, we were met by our Agent Coordinator, Georgie and Sales Director, Marc and some 40 or so other agents from the Cairns Region.   After check-in we were taken to our "bunk house" accommodation and very impressed with not only the location (right on the beach) clean, quiet & cool.
Our first swim in the pristine waters (need thongs to walk on the coral, shell) was amazing and treated to platters of wonderful finger food and drinks before our departure on the Thunderbolt Rafting afternoon to the outer reef.
Harry and the crew were meticulous with their safety talk & instructions plus donning our rafting vests, spray jackets and safety belts.  I was feeling a little apprehensive at this stage - probably because I had just been advised the vessel travels at 80+ Kms per hour.  Anyway, its too late now so off we went.
Ever been on a roller coaster - this is worse.   It bumped, crashed, swerved, swayed and flew through the air.  This is definitely not for the weak at heart.   Utter madness and I can still hear the screams, yells, yahoos & clapping - and the sight of all these arms held high wanting them to go faster and crazier.  The crew kept coming to us during the trip  asking if we were ok.   My fingers had frozen around the hand rail on the seat in front of me however, I have not laughed so much in years and it was theThunderbolt around Fitzroy Island most exhilarating experience I have had since I don't know when.
We arrived at a beautiful location at the northern end of Moore Reef and began our snorkel.  Such care and attention was given by the crew and my friend who is a non-swimmer who used a "noodle" with her snorkel & fins and we had a fantastic hour snorkelling this amazing part of the reef.   We then all went back on board (after serious head-count) and moved to another sight where we did some more snorkelling.
All back on board and we ventured home with the same amount of vigour - truly amazing - I even managed a little "arms up" once or twice and noticed I could not stop laughing and screaming - such an experience.
That evening (Saturday) after a fantastic banquet/buffet we attended the Beach Party.   Raging is all I will say with some 150 or so people really letting their hair down - and as they say "what happens on the Island - stays on the island (ha ha)."   Recovery Sunday on the beach and back home on the Fitzroy Flyer.
If you want to get a new lease of life or renew the old - Contact us at info@visitcairns.com.au and put  Fitzroy & the Thunderbolt on your agenda.
Cheers for now - Heidi & Marty
