Total Solar Eclipse Cairns 2012

Cairns and Port Douglas will be the best places on Earth to witness the November 13th 2012 total eclipse of the Sun.

The city of Cairns is in the umbra of the eclipse and the general area to the north is probably the best observation location on the mainland. The totality is at 6:39 am local time, (20:39 UT), the sun will be 14 ° from the horizon and the duration is 02m04s.

A beach located between Cairns and Port Douglas, Oak Beach, is being generally regarded as the best viewing.

Over 40,000 people watched the last eclipse in Australia at Ceduna in South Australia in 2003. So if you are planning to visit Cairns for this eclipse my advice is to book any accommodation early.

There are a few eclipse festivals being planned, as soon as I find one with confirmed plans I'll start posting information here.
